The Sportsfield Bar Tralee

“The Sportsfield Bar” is located in the heart of Boherbee in Tralee. Established by the Vale Family in 1828 (the year Daniel O’Connell pushed through The Catholic Emancipation Bill in The House of Commons in Westminster, London) it is one of the oldest and most historic public houses in the town. For the past 40 years
For the past 40 years it is in the proprietorship of the Roche Family. During those four decades it has hosted many memorable events. Local Radio Kerry and National Radio RTE One have both recorded some of these events and the local contributions for posterity. On entering the house one cannot but feel the atmosphere therein. Over the years some tremendous traditional Irish music sessions have taken place here. Instruments ranging from the bodhrán to the bagpipes have echoed through the premises creating the unique atmosphere already mentioned. Impromptu sessions in music and song are features such is the talent of the clientele that frequent this establishment. The proprietor, Damien Roche, known locally and beyond as “The Singing Barman” has contributed many famous renditions many of which are, if we are to judge from the hits, receiving rave reviews on YouTube in far off places like London and New York. The international link is maintained in the sponsorship of Rose of Tralee contestants from such diverse places as Sydney and Toronto over the years.

Profile Description

As the name suggests sport plays a major part in the activities and discussions in the pub. It is in the catchment area for the famous John Mitchels GAA club. It is also adjacent to the Austin Stack Park. On match days serious pre-match and post-match debates are played out as accents from different parts of the country make their contributions. Generally the day winds up in a major sing song. It is also popular with the greyhound, horse racing and equestrian fraternities. It is not all about outdoor sport either. The Sportsfield Bar pool tournaments are of a very prestigious standard and attract great high calibre entries from far and near. Between games contestants can relax in the finely appointed beer garden and ponder their next moves.
The interior walls of the bar feature photographs down the years. These photographs are in effect a historical timeline of personalities and events in Boherbee. They take you on a nostalgic walk down memory lane as they document the famous characters that passed its doors and recall the tremendous social and cultural events that occurred on these premises. Having your photograph on the wall is living proof that you entered “The Sportsfield Hall of Fame”….. a badge of honour indeed.
Despite all the activity customers make plenty time for convivial and inclusive chats. Mighty debates on all kinds of topics have taken place with some insightful contributions and some legendary statements being made.
The great selection of drinks, the outstanding pint of Guinness and the great company therein set the tone for a most satisfying experience in The Sportsfield Bar.
